Design Competition

Senior Team Design

Description - The Senior Design Team category requires students to produce a feasible design with limited materials and preparation time. The competitors will have to think quickly in order to produce a working solution. The teams must design, construct, test and present a solution to a previously undisclosed project using a combination of teamwork and problem solving skills.

Format - Teams in Senior Team Design are required to design, construct and test their project and then present an oral presentation and demonstrate their design. The project will be revealed at the start of the first half of the competition. The teams will then have limited time and materials to design, construct and test a solution to the problem. The oral presentation should summarize the design process, the design itself, and any unique aspects of the design to the judges and the general public. During the oral presentation, the team must demonstrate the design to show how well it meets the requirements of the project. Competitors will be given a maximum of fifteen (15) minutes to present. A five (5) minutes question period will follow the presentation during which the judges and the general public will be allowed to ask questions, with priority given to the judges' questions.

Junior Team Design

Description - The team design category requires teams of junior (1st and 2nd year) engineering students to produce a design with limited materials and preparation time. Like the senior design competition, the competitors will have to use a combination of teamwork and problem solving skills to present a solution to a previously undisclosed project. The design problem is disclosed the day of the competition and teams are provided reference books and access to the internet, programming and design software to assist in their design.

Format - Teams in Junior Design are required to design, construct, and test their project during the limited time provided in the first half of the competition and then present an oral presentation and demonstrate their design in the second half of the competition. The project will be revealed at the start of the first half of the competition. The teams will then have limited time and materials to design, construct and test a solution to the problem. During the oral presentation, the team must demonstrate the design to shoe how well it meets the requirements of the project. Competitors will be given a maximum of five (5) minutes to present. A five (5) minutes question period will follow the presentation during which the judges and general public will be allowed to ask questions, with priority given to the judges' questions.

Engineering Consulting

Description - The Consulting Engineering category allows teams of up to four students to produce a solution to a real-life consulting engineering problem. In this category, sufficient preparation, teamwork, resourcefulness and presentation skills are equally essential.

Format - Teams in Consulting Engineering are required to submit proposals for the judges' review at 4 pm. The teams are required to present an oral presentation at the competition which they have two (2) hours to prepare. Competitors will be given a maximum of fifteen (15) minutes to present. A five (5) minute question period will follow the presentation during which the judges and general public will be allowed to ask questions, with priority given to the judges' questions. Each team will have a maximum of five (5) minutes to setup prior to their presentation.

Innovative Engineering

Description - The Entrepreneurial Design category encourages undergraduate engineering students to utilize their creativity and education in the development of a new product or service. In this category, competitors must design a new marketable product or service and construct a business plan for its commercialization. Winning entries will have combined originality, technological and economic feasibility, solid marketing plan and a high quality presentation and exhibit.

Format - Teams in Entrepreneurial Design are required to set up an exhibit in a trade show style booth and present an oral presentation at the competition. The exhibit should display the design in a clear, concise, well-organized, informative and professional manner. Project drawings and technical and economic analysis reports should be part of the display. Display of a prototype or model to demonstrate the feasibility of the design is strongly recommended. During public viewing hours, the exhibit must be staffed by at least one team member in order to answer questions. The oral presentation should summarize the technical, market and economic analysis and demonstrate the design to the judges and the general public. Competitors will be given a maximum of twenty (20) minutes to present. A ten (10) minute question period will follow the presentation during which the judges and the general public will be allowed to ask questions, with priority given to the judges' questions. Each team will have a maximum of five (5) minutes to setup prior to their presentation.

Engineering Communication

Description - The Engineering Communication category requires students to develop and present a view point on the social, economic and environmental impact of any current technological issue. The presentation must simplify technical processes or issues into terms a person outside their discipline would understand. In this category competitors must identify a technological issue, form an opinion and present a convincing and well-supported argument. Winning entries will have combined thorough research, a convincing viewpoint and a dynamic presentation.

Format - Teams in Engineering Communications are required to present an oral presentation at the Ontario Engineering Competition. Competitors will be given a maximum of thirty (30) minutes to present. A ten (10) minute question period will follow the presentation during which the judges and the general public will be allowed to ask questions, with priority given to the judges' questions. Each team will have a maximum of five (5) minutes to setup prior to their presentation.

Parliamentary Debate

Description - The goal of the Parliamentary Debate Category is to encourage undergraduate engineering students to present a well-reasoned viewpoint within a minimum preparation time. Engineers are often required to evaluate and argue for or against a proposal on short notice. In this category, competitors will defend or refute a previously undisclosed resolution using the format of parliamentary style debate.

Format - Teams in Parliamentary Debate are required to debate resolutions using the format of parliamentary style debate. The resolutions will be topics related to science, engineering, technology, education or other topics of direct interest to engineers and engineering students. Each team will debate at least four (4) times in the preliminary rounds. Four teams will proceed to the semi-final round. The semi-finalists will be four teams with the highest total points awarded in the preliminary rounds.

National Engineering Week

We still need volunteers for National Engineering Week. This involves planning some of the events that that take place over the course of the week. It requires a bit of a time commitment however the award will be greatly worth the effort. This position will look great on your resume and you get a BIG STAMP in your passport. If you want to get involved please go to getinvolved.engsoc.org.

New School Year

So, a new academic year at Carleton has begun and you want to know what your lazy VP Academic did over the summer. Well, besides sitting on the beach catching rays and meeting up with today's hip and cool crowd (this is my fancy way of saying I working for the Canadian Government thus doing nothing while receiving a pay cheque).

TEXTBOOK TRADE

The Textbook Trade has begun in earnest so bring your used textbooks books to the CSES Office (2090 MC). You name the price and you get all the money, CSES merely gives you a safe place to display your textbook so that some other student may purchase it. Once your textbook is sold then you can pick up the money at the CSES Office. CSES is not responsible for lost or stolen textbooks and I will post the rules of the textbook trade on Tuesday.

The Textbook Trade is on from September 8th until October 2nd. Once the Textbook Trade ends you have until October 30th to pick up your money or textbook from the CSES Office (2090 MC).

ANY TEXTBOOKS OR MONEY LEFT UNTIL NOVEMBER 1st WILL BE FORFEIT TO THE CSES SOCIETY!!!

TEXTBOOK LIBRARY

Money donated from CUESEF last year has purchased several new textbooks for the First and Second Year Engineers at Carleton. These books will be available for lending once the library is up online for students to view. Please note that students are only able to borrow books for 24 hours and after that a hold will be placed on your account. Any books not returned will be replaced at the students expense.

The current Textbook Library Director, Luke Linsemen, has worked hard this summer to ensure that all the textbooks have been placed into the database. Soon, letters will be sent out requesting donations from companies around Ottawa for the upper year textbooks. Stay tuned for more information on that.

McCOY'S STUDY LOUNGE

With the funds donated by CUESEF several nice new comfortable chairs have been purchased. These chairs are much more comfortable than the old and all thanks to the efforts of Jessica Lynch. Please respect the study lounge and leave the chairs in the room. Any chairs found outside of the study lounge should be returned.

As there is no director for the study lounge this year, it will be up to the students to ensure that the lounge is kept clean. Thank you for your assistance.

NATIONAL ENGINEERING WEEK

IF you want to get involved with CSES in a BIG way volunteer to help with National Engineering Week. The committee NEEDS to be filled this year. There are 6 vacant positions that need volunteers in order to get this week underway. Without these volunteers, it is very likely that NEW will NOT run this year. Don't forget you will receive TWO BIG STAMPS in your passport. Please fill out an application at getinvolved.engsoc.org!

ACADEMIC ASSISTANT

If you want to volunteer in a position that will look good on your resume or are considering being VP Academic in the future, this is the position for you. This position gets you oriented within CSES and teaches you a lot about the Academic portfolio. It will require about 2 hours a week (or less) but you essentially get out of it what you put in. Please fill out an application at getinvolved.engsoc.org!

DESIGN COMPETITION

Design Competition has been planned and applications will go up at the beginning of October. The date of the competition is November 14th and the challenges will be amazing. Anyone considering Senior Design WILL REQUIRE someone that knows programming as well as a laptop!!! Please remember this when accumulating your team!

Academic Yearly Report

TEXTBOOK TRADE

Textbook trade took place from the first day of classes to the end of the month each semester. New forms were created for this year as the old forms could not be found. During the pick-up of winter term books, a student volunteered to create a database in which to keep track of the books brought in the for textbook trade. This will allow students to register their books online then leave them in CSES on display. It will also be easier and faster to find people’s names and books however, student cards will still be required before a student is allowed to take their book or receive their cash.

TEXTBOOK LIBRARY

With the help of Luke “RickRoll” Linseman, all of the textbooks in the textbook library have been inputted into the computer system. Bar codes will have to be placed on the books that are currently without them, in addition to this, the new webmaster will need to be contacted about getting the database up online for next year. Two CUESEF proposals were put in for requesting funds, the first, in the Fall was turned down. The second, has yet to be determined.

This summer, companies around the Ottawa area will be encouraged to purchase new textbooks, relevant to the courses currently being taken by student, and donate them. Applications for Textbook Library Director are currently being accepted at getinvolved located on cses.carleton.ca

EXAM LIBRARY

Greg “Bubblicious” Harrington has gone through the box of exams from 2000 = 2006, scanning and posting all the exams that were not yet up. There were also a few exams from 2008 which were posted at the beginning of the semester. In total, 664 exams are up and there were 365 when Greg began. All the professors for classes have been e-mailed twice, however, few professors actually respond. Over the summer, professor shall be visited and encouraged to participate more with the exam library.

The exam library can be found at exams.engsoc.org, however, these exams can only be accessed from a computer on campus or those with an EngSoc account. Thank you Greg for doing such a great job!!

DESIGN COMPETITION

Design Competition was organized by Erin Jewell and Ben Kane this year. A lot of effort went into creating competitions that would be challenging but also prepare students for the Ontario Engineering Competitions. This years’ tasks were well implemented, although several hiccups occurred during the actual challenges.

Feedback was taken from the students that attended the Design Competition portion and next year’s competition will be planned further in advance. Also more advertising will occur so that all 6 categories will be filled. It is hoped that earlier organization will allow for ample time to recruit professors to assist with the judging of presentation in addition to a couple of professor teams competing.

NATIONAL ENGINEERING WEEK

Christa Sexaeur put a lot of effort into this years’ National Engineering Week and it came out very well. Although the presentations in the galleria did not have tables and the activities’ portion was cancelled, the competitions that ran for the children was successful as well as the fundraiser.

For next year, more volunteers will be recruited for organizing the event. There will be four directors that are required:

1. Children’s competition
2. Children’s activities
3. University Activities/Competitions
4. 4th year projects and Student Group displays in Minto Lobby

Christa will also be training someone next year to take over as she will be graduating (we’re very proud of Christa). Anyone interested in participating next year should apply at getinvolved location on cses.carleton.ca.
Special thanks to The Simulator Project, The Lunar Penetrator, Engineers Without Border, WISE, MoonBuggy, FSAE, GNCTR, Engineering Recruitment, Rosalyn Seeton, Matthew Ng, Virtual Ventures and all the volunteers!!

INTERFACE

Although Interface did not run this year, it was researched in depth the constructor of setting up a conference and workplace recruitment event such as this. Interface will take place next year and applications are currently being accepted for Directors!

March Update!

NATIONAL ENGINEERING WEEK

NEW went very well, there were several hiccups, however these occurred as a result of being unfamiliar with the procedures for organizing an event of the size that Christa and I attempted to organize. The competitions were avery big success with the school children and plans to make next year's NEW bigger and better are underway.

With more planning and volunteers we hope to improve upon the success of this year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students and projects that helped to make this year a success!!! THANK YOU!!

PI DAY!

Pi Day ran March 13, 2009 to raise money for CHEO, a total of $125 was raised and will be donated within the week. I would like to thank all the students that participated and my three volunteers Kaitlyn, Jess and Ricky!!! You were awesome!
